Reading Badge Award Sheme

6th November 2015

We have launched a new reading badge award in school for all our children.  Children have to complete a number of tasks and read a number of books in order to achieve a badge.  This can be done at home or at school, although some of the tasks are more suited to home reading.

When your child has read the book or listened and talked about what they have heard then please sign the record sheet.  The record sheets will be kept in the back of the yellow reading record book and we will keep a record in school.  When the reading tasks have been completed and the teacher has had a chance to talk to the child about what they have read and learned badges will be awarded in the Friday achievement assembly.

There is a second badge which can be earned by the children.   This is linked to the child’s reading age and they can achieve this badge after they have read the books for their year group and earned the first badge.

We have to test the children to measure reading age accurately so the reading age badge will be given out in batches after the testing has taken place.  The government has a much publicised new ‘tougher’ curriculum expecting higher standards from children.  The new national expectations equate approximately to the following reading ages:
